The Minerals Marketing Corporation of Zimbabwe (MMCZ) coordinated the Ministry of Mines and Mining Development’s (MMMD) inaugural clean-up campaign on Friday, 5 April. The MMMD Minister Winston Chitando led the state owned enterprises under his portfolio during clean-up at Batanai primary school in Mabvuku last Friday. He was accompanied by his deputy Hon P Kambamura, the Secretary for MMMD, Mr Onesimo M Moyo and directors in the Ministry. MMCZ board members comprising Dr Eng. Mercy Manyuchi, Mrs Rosemary Mukogo and Mr Ignatious Tichivangana as well as Mr Tongai Muzenda, MMCZ’s General Manager graced the event and led the MMCZ team from the front.

MMCZ was responsible for coordinating the efforts of the MMMD team comprising Mining Promotion Corporation (MPC), Zimbabwe Mining Development Corporation (ZMDC) Chamber of Mines of Zimbabwe (COMZ) represented by Mr Isaac Kwesu and Zimbabwe Consolidated Diamond Company (ZCDC) in collaboration National Waste Collection (NWC). Furthermore, MMCZ availed a frontend loader, dump truck, industrial grass cutter and some protective clothing to enable work on the illegal dumps that had piled up around the school property. This initiative saw the MMMD team tidy up the school’s environs that had become filthy as residents around the institution had resorted to dumping waste in the school grounds and near the school walls. The MMCZ board members sympathised with the school children whose sporting activities were affected by the state of the grounds following the illegal dumping of waste onto the school grounds and vowed to look into rehabilitation of these.

The NWC representative implored communities to shun burning plastic and paper waste as collecting these for recycling had financial incentives.

The clean-up was conducted in line with President Mnangagwa’s declaration that the first Friday of each calendar month is national environment cleaning day.
